In May 2019, the Texas House and Senate passed the joint resolution, HCR 140. Governor Abbott subsequently signed it on June 7, 2019. The resolution, sponsored jointly by Representatives Herrero and Hunter, and Senators Hinojosa and Zaffirini, proclaimed 2020 the year to Embrace the Gulf of Mexico.
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) President Dr. Kelly Quintanilla, recognized the significance of this resolution and the value of the Gulf of Mexico. She noted this year-long celebration, “provides many opportunities for the Island University to highlight the important research conducted by our scientists and the economic and environmental impact it has in our region and across the state.”
Gulf of Mexico Alliance Wildlife and Fisheries Team Coordinator, Mikell Smith, played a significant role in introducing the campaign to state leadership and the Harte Research Institute at TAMUCC. A resolution is a great way to promote the positive value the Gulf provides in our lives. Any city, county, parish, committee, or other organization can pass a resolution to proclaim the year 2020 as one to “Embrace the Gulf.”
